Cascading another router to a main router.

Alright so you want to connect one more router to already setup router, so as to widen your wireless range or may be connect one more PC with the ethernet cable.

I use  the following two routers in my home :
1.N-150 ADSL2  (will be referring as Main) 2.N-300 ADSL2 ( will be referring as Sub ).

STEP 1  : Knowing Main router details.

1.You'll be needing the ip address and the subnet mask of the Main router.
Windows users : Goto run(win + r) -> type "cmd" -> type "ipconfig". You'll get the ip and the subnet mask listed, note it down.
Mac users : Open the Terminal window, type the command "route -n get default" and note the data down.
By default the d-link routers have 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1

2. Now open your browser on the computer to which the main router is connected, and type the ip address you just noted down. Now the browser will prompt you to enter the login credentials, you'll need these to access the router settings. If you've forgotten don't worry just google the default router password and username for your router brand.Usually for d-link routers the username is  "admin"  and password is  "admin"  or blank for some models.

3.Once you get the access to the settings, navigate to the wireless settings tab and note down the ssid, the channel used.If the channel is set to  auto-scan then change it  to any other channel but keep note of these two.

If you've a protected mode of your wireless connection, then you'll have to note down the security mode used (WPA,WEP or something else).

4.Navigate to the DHCP settings and enable it.Also set large range values for DHCP ip address range.

STEP 2 : Configuring the Sub router.
1.Now you'll need to power up the second router by using it's adapter and connecting it to another computer or the same one used before using the ethernet cable.Detach the main router, if you're using the same computer again.

2.Now open your browser again and type the default ip address of your router (Usually it's 192.168.1.1),login using default login credentials.

3.Now configure the wireless settings of the sub router as the Main router had. The security mode and channel used must match. You may use different ssid and secret passphrase. But the modes (WPA or WEP ....) must match.

4.Here you'll have to disable the DHCP and make sure the subnet mask of the Sub router stays same as the Main router. Now you'll have to do the last thing that is change the ip address of the Sub router, which must be  different than Main router address. If Main has 192.168.1.1 Sub may have 192.168.1.2 /192.168.1.8 .But make sure the ip address stays within the range specified by you before (STEP 1, point 4).

STEP 3 : The final step.
Disconnect the ethernet cable of Sub router from the computer used during step2 and connect it to the Main. Basically do this !!.

THAT's ALL FOLkS.
